New Year's Eve Party Games for a Girls Night

Six New Year's Eve games for a girls night in, played on one phone. No props, no printouts, and no app. The prompts below are examples you can read aloud. The buttons open a shuffled deck with the same kind of round already selected.

A girls night in, timed around midnight

This page is for an adult girls night at home, not a teen party and not a family countdown with kids in the room. The useful version of New Year's Eve is a small group, one sofa, and a plan that ends before the year does. You do not need a bar, a hat box, or a game you have to explain for ten minutes. If the night is Christmas instead, use the Christmas games for girls night.

Run the night in four beats. While coats are still coming off, play icebreakers and stop when everyone has spoken once. Through the middle of the evening, use Most Likely To and Would You Rather, about eight cards each, then switch or pause. In the hour before midnight, play a short Truth round and put the phone down at least ten minutes before twelve. After the countdown, one sofa challenge or one toast is enough. A deck that is still going at 12:01 has stolen the only moment the night was for.

Agree the pass before the first card

Anyone may pass, with no reason, and the turn is over. Do not re-ask. Do not film. If a prompt is about someone who is not in the room, it is a pass. Put the phone in Do Not Disturb and sit where everyone can hear the reader. One reader is enough.

None of these rounds need a drink. If the group wants a sip rule, use the drinking games for girls night and pick the forfeit before you start: one small sip, a finger down, or a one-sentence story. Water, soda, and tea use the same rule. Play that version only if everyone drinking alcohol is of legal drinking age. If the phone needs a charge, the games with no equipment cover the gap, and the girls night questions to ask are the same kind of night with no score at all.

Icebreakers, then a resolution confession

The first game should let someone who just walked in speak once. The second one can be about the year you are leaving. Keep both short.

  1. Arrival icebreakers

Read a card, or use one of these if you want the year in the question. What is one hour from this year you would replay, and one you would skip? Show the last photo you would actually let this group see. Name a plan you cancelled that turned out to be the right call. Answer in one sentence. A sip is not part of this round. Nobody is out, and nobody keeps score. Stop when every person has had a turn, including the person who hosted. This is also the right opener when someone is not drinking, or when a friend brought someone the group is still meeting.

    Play the Icebreakers deck

Best for: the first ten minutes
  2. Resolutions, as Never Have I Ever

Frame the round as this year, or as New Year's Eve itself. Read the card. Anyone who has done it says so, or puts a finger down if you are counting fingers. Do not demand the story. Example lines, if you want a theme the card does not already have: Never have I ever broken a resolution before the end of January. Never have I ever kissed someone at midnight and regretted the timing more than the kiss. Never have I ever told this group I was staying in, then went out anyway. Start on Chill or Fun. The written list, if you would rather read from a page, is the Never Have I Ever questions. The phone shuffles a different set.

Play the Never Have I Ever deck

Best for: the first real game

A vote, then a this-or-that

These two tell the room who is involved. You do not have to invent a forfeit. Point, or pick a hand, and move on.

  1. Midnight Most Likely To

Read the prompt. Count to three. Everyone points at the same time, including the reader, so the first talker does not choose for the room. The person with the most fingers gets one sentence of defence if she wants it. Decide ties before you start: both win, or you read it again. Point only at people who are playing. A prompt about someone who left is not this game. Examples you can use when you want the card to sound like midnight: Most likely to text an ex at 12:01. Most likely to be asleep on this sofa before the countdown. Most likely to announce a resolution that is really a dare. For more lines to read aloud, use the Most Likely To questions and skip any that do not fit the guest list.

Play the Most Likely To deck

Best for: friends who can take a joke
  2. New Year Would You Rather

Read the first choice, pause, then read the second. Count to three. Left hand for the first choice, right hand for the second, or just say it. A tie can stand. Saying neither is a pass, not a third side you argue someone into. Keep any reason to one sentence so the choice stays the game. Examples: Stay in with this group, or go to a loud party and lose your voice. One honest resolution, or three tiny ones you might actually keep. The first toast of the new year, or the last song of this one. If the guest list is mixed, stay on the funny choices and skip anything about dating. The would you rather questions are a written set you can use without the phone.

Play the Would You Rather deck

Best for: a group that likes picking sides

A quieter truth, then one sofa challenge

Truth is the round that needs the pass rule most. The challenge is a single beat after midnight, not a second party.

  1. Truth, before the countdown

Play this in the hour before midnight, and stop with time to spare. The card is already a truth, so she does not pick truth or dare first. Read it. She answers in a sentence or two, or she passes. Do not offer a harder question as a bargain. If the truth is about someone outside the room, she passes and you move on. Examples, if you want the year in the question: What is one thing from this year you are done carrying into the next one? Who in this room made your year better, and what did she actually do? What do you want to be true by next New Year's Eve that is not true tonight? The link below selects only the Truth deck. Written prompts with the same pass rule are on the truth or dare questions.

    Play the Truth deck

Best for: the slow hour before twelve
  2. One challenge after midnight

Wait until the countdown is over. Read one challenge, maybe three, then stop. She does it, or she passes. If the dare needs a prop you do not have, a stranger, a phone camera, or a post, it is an automatic pass. Keep it in the seat: a voice, a toast, a ten-second bit. Nothing is filmed. Examples: Give a ten-second toast to the person on your left, and it has to name something she did this year. Hold the face you will actually have at midnight, for three seconds. Teach the chorus of the song you replayed all year, then sit down. The link selects only the Challenge deck, which is the dare half of truth or dare.

    Play the Challenge deck

Best for: the first minutes of the year

After Dark is a separate 18+ deck. The game asks you to confirm that everyone playing is old enough before those cards are included, and it is not the New Year's Eve default. The 18+ question guide explains when that round fits. If you do opt in, the pass rule on this page does not change.

When New Year's Eve is also her night

Use Bride Mode only when the night is for a bride, the people playing have agreed, and she wants a round about her. She can pass. If parents or anyone who did not come for a hen party are still in the room, do not open it. Play the hen party games at home on Chill instead, or run the how well do you know the bride quiz with no forfeits. A family-friendly shower on one phone is the bridal shower games on phone. A one-phone hosting plan for a US bachelorette is the bachelorette games on one phone, and the bachelorette party questions are a written set for stories about her.

One example, if you want the new year in a bride prompt: what is a resolution for her first year of marriage that she is willing to say out loud, and what is one she is keeping? Then let her pass if she would rather not. The deck itself is not that sentence. It shuffles Bride Mode cards.

How the buttons open the game

Each button on this page opens setup with that one deck already selected and the others switched off. The level starts on Fun. Drop it to Chill while people are still arriving, or if someone new is in the room. Spicy stays off until the whole group wants it. Pass the phone after each card. Play about eight cards, then switch games or stop for the countdown.

The example prompts on this page are not the cards in the deck. Read them when you want a New Year's line the shuffle did not deal, or use them instead of a card. If the room liked being read to from a page, stay with the written guides linked above. If they liked being dealt to, stay on the phone.

You do not pay per deck. The first 6 cards are free to start. The full unlock is a one-time $4.99 payment. It is not a subscription.

Deal an icebreaker, then put the phone down at midnight.

The link opens setup with Icebreakers selected. One sentence each, then move on. The first 6 cards are free to start.

FAQ

What are good New Year's Eve games for a girls night in?

Start with icebreakers while people arrive, then Most Likely To or Would You Rather. Save a short Truth round for the hour before midnight, and play one sofa challenge after the countdown. Every game on this page runs on one phone, with no props.

Do we need an app or anything to print?

No. Open the game in a phone browser. The buttons on this page select a deck for you. There is nothing to download and nothing to print.

How do you leave time for the midnight countdown?

Stop dealing cards at least ten minutes before midnight. Put the phone face down, watch the countdown, then play one challenge or a toast if you still want a game. Do not be in the middle of a card when the year turns.

What if some people are not drinking?

None of these games require alcohol. If you want a sip version, use the drinking games guide and agree a soft-drink forfeit before the first card. A pass is a finished turn.

How much does the phone game cost?

The first 6 cards are free to start. The full unlock is a one-time $4.99 payment. It is not a subscription.
